Many people think of jogging when asked to name a healthy form of exercise. But walking can offer much of the same health benefits as jogging. Jogging is more strenuous than walking, so of course, it takes longer to reap the exercise benefits of walking. But surprisingly, it doesn’t take that much longer.  

Taking a brisk walk at some point in your day for under an hour can keep you fit and healthy. It’s great for your heart and circulatory system, and maybe the best part is that it’s easy on your knees and back. 

Aches and Pains of Jogging

Joggers are notorious for developing foot, knee and back problems, especially when they’re older. People who grew up jogging dread the day they reach the point that various parts of their bodies start to give them problems because jogging is a sport they love. 

They may find themselves having to slow down to walk to spare their knees and backs, and that’s where they may be surprised at the benefits of walking. Walkers tend to swing their arms a bit more than joggers when they walk, which adds to their overall movement and, in turn, the health benefits. 

And while jogging is one of the healthiest activities you can do, plenty of joggers strain muscles and joints pursuing their sport and have to take off to let their injuries heal. This also can take longer the older you are. 

People who get in shape by walking rarely have the problems joggers do because they don’t experience the same stresses on their feet, ankles, knees and back. So, if you want to get in shape but don’t want to suffer injuries that would throw a wrench into your plans, start off with a brisk walk and just keep walking. You’ll be in better shape and healthier than ever before you know it.
